Buy a used crane or keep hiring? Count the confirmed jobs first
Owning a crane feels attractive when you keep paying hire charges. Before buying one, separate the jobs you already have from the work you hope to win. An idle machine still ties up money and needs a plan for storage, care and future inspections.
Our view: hire is worth serious consideration when the jobs are occasional or vary widely. Buying a used crane becomes a stronger option when you have a dependable workload, a suitable machine and the people and arrangements needed to operate it properly.
Specify the lifting job before comparing prices
A craneโs headline tonnage is not its capacity at every reach. Manufacturer load charts distinguish working radius and configuration. Give a competent lifting provider the load, lift position, required reach, access and site conditions, and have them establish the correct crane and lifting plan. This guide is about purchasing, not instructions for carrying out a lift. Example Tadano manufacturer load-chart document.
There are Malaysian hire offers for Tadano mobile cranes, and Tadano provides an Asian distributor directory. Those give you starting points for quotations and support enquiries, not proof that any advertised crane is suitable for your job. Delta Craneโs hire service, Tadano distributor directory.
Buying used versus hiring for the job
| Cost or commitment | Buy a used crane | Hire a suitable crane |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Test the purchase against confirmed demand, including quiet periods | Match the hire to the work you have actually booked |
| Initial outlay | Purchase, assessment, any work due and the arrangements needed to put it into service | Mobilisation, hire period and other agreed charges |
| People and responsibility | Establish competent operation, maintenance and all applicable requirements | Confirm exactly what the provider supplies and what remains your responsibility |
| Different jobs | Your own craneโs configuration may not suit every lift | Obtain a suitable specification for each job and confirm availability |
| Disruption | Plan for repairs and a replacement arrangement | Ask about breakdown, cancellation, waiting time and replacement terms |
There is no universal number of hire days after which ownership becomes cheaper. The result depends on your actual quotations, workload and ownership costs.
Ask for two usable quotations
For hiring, request a written scope covering the crane specification, operating arrangements, transport, minimum booking, waiting time, overtime and cancellation terms. Do not assume the day rate includes every item.
For buying, get an independent assessment and ask for the machineโs identity, service and repair history, documents, load charts and written details of any refurbishment. Have a competent provider confirm the requirements for your intended use. A sellerโs photograph or fresh paint is not a substitute for that evidence.
Then compare the costs over the same realistic period. Include the jobs you can substantiate and show uncertain work separately. This gives you a more useful answer than comparing one monthโs hire bill with one loan instalment.
The decision we would favour
If your work varies from one project to another, hiring can help you avoid buying a crane that fits only part of the workload. If the work is steady and ownership is supported by the assessment and operating plan, a used machine may be worth buying.
