Used electric or diesel forklift? Start with your working day
For a forklift that works mainly inside a warehouse, start with a used electric truck only after the battery and charging plan pass the test. For an outdoor or mixed-duty operation where charging breaks cannot be built into the shift, a diesel truck may be the more workable shortlist — but only after the operating environment and exhaust exposure are checked. Our verdict: buy the power system that can complete your actual shift safely and predictably; do not let a low truck price hide an unpriced battery, charger or site change.

The battery question is the deciding question on a used electric truck
Toyota’s manufacturer guidance says charging methods should be selected around shifts, battery usage and fleet utilisation. It distinguishes conventional charging from opportunity charging, and says lead-acid batteries used with fast charging may need periodic full charges, equalisation and cool-down. Lithium-ion does not follow the same routine. For a lead-acid battery, Malaysia’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health guidance is especially practical: hydrogen can be evolved during charging, and it calls for a designated, well-ventilated charging area, no smoking or naked lights, and suitable precautions for electrolyte exposure. Ask the electric seller for the chemistry, voltage and amp-hour rating, identification, age, maintenance and capacity-test evidence, charger model/connector and previous charging routine. If those answers are unavailable, price a battery assessment and compatible charging arrangement before treating the truck as a bargain.
Where diesel can still be the practical choice
Diesel may fit work that is substantially outdoors, needs fuel availability rather than planned charging, or has a duty cycle the proposed electric battery cannot document. It is not a shortcut around suitability. OSHA’s forklift workplace guidance warns that internal-combustion forklifts can create indoor-air hazards and says combustion engines should not run inside a warehouse, plant or ship without adequate ventilation. A Malaysian supplier can be a useful discovery point without being a recommendation. Do not use a supplier’s generic “electric is cheaper” calculation as your budget. Ask both sellers for the specification and the ready-to-work price. Then obtain local quotations for the electric supply/charging work where needed, and use your own shift, fuel and electricity records to test the running-cost case. No universal savings figure can responsibly stand in for that worksheet.
Decide with a shift sheet, then delay if the evidence is weak
For each truck, record: rated capacity at your load centre and lift height; mast and attachment; hours per shift; travel surface and wet/outdoor exposure; charge or refuel breaks; battery/engine evidence; included repairs; delivery; and each cost still unknown. Electric wins when the documented battery and charging plan cover the actual work in a suitable environment. Diesel wins when its operating environment and service evidence fit the job better and charging would disrupt it or require unpriced changes.
Delay the purchase when a seller cannot match the capacity to your load centre and lift height, cannot show battery or engine evidence, or has not stated what is included. A short-term rental or retaining the current truck while obtaining complete quotations may cost less than a stalled warehouse shift.
