Used bulldozer: standard tracks or LGP for your ground?
A wide-track bulldozer can look like a safer choice when you are worried about soft ground. But โwiderโ should not become the whole buying decision. The ground, the task, the undercarriageโs condition and the cost of moving the machine all belong in the comparison.
We would choose the track configuration for the job first, then compare the condition and price of suitable used units. A cheap machine with the wrong setup is not a saving if you must change it or hire something else to finish the work.
What LGP means for the shortlist
LGP means low ground pressure. Caterpillar describes the wider-track approach as increasing ground contact area, and its LGP dozer information identifies soft-ground applications. This is a configuration principle; it does not establish that a particular used machine is suitable for your site. Caterpillarโs LGP explanation.
Ask the supplier to identify the full model, installed shoes and undercarriage configuration, and have the siteโs requirements assessed. Do not assume a machine still has the setup shown in a brochure from its original production year.
Standard-track or LGP?
| Decision | Standard-track used bulldozer | LGP used bulldozer |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Investigate where the documented configuration fits the ground and task | Investigate when soft-ground conditions make flotation a specific requirement |
| Proof to request | Exact model, installed track-shoe details and a site-fit assessment | The same details; verify the advertised LGP configuration is actually fitted |
| Undercarriage condition | Obtain measurements and a repair assessment | Obtain the same assessment for its fitted components |
| Transport and access | Quote actual dimensions, mass and route | Quote the actual width and mass rather than assuming the other unitโs transport arrangements apply |
| Price judgement | Add work due and mobilisation to the asking price | Compare that same total; pay extra only for a configuration you need |
This is a selection checklist, not a claim that one configuration performs better on every type of ground.
Look underneath before admiring the paint
Caterpillarโs undercarriage guidance stresses matching the shoes to the application and maintaining the system. Ask an inspector to assess the tracks and associated components, record the findings and identify the work that should be budgeted. Caterpillar dozer undercarriage guidance.
Request a written parts-and-labour quotation for significant work. If a seller describes the bulldozer as refurbished, ask which components were renewed, when the work was done and what is covered by the warranty. The word alone does not tell you how much usable life remains.
Malaysian suppliers list used bulldozers from more than one manufacturer. Use their stock pages to locate candidates, then compare documents and condition rather than assuming one badge will deliver a lower repair bill. Browse Finbondโs used bulldozers.
Our money-saving priority
We would spend first on establishing whether the machine suits the work and on finding out what repairs are due. Those answers make negotiation more useful: you can discuss a specific cost rather than asking for a discount without knowing what you are buying.
If the seller will not allow an appropriate assessment, the low price deserves more caution, not a faster decision.
